Elegant homes set in a Georgian gem

A superb example of Georgian architecture in a prime location, Madge House holds a special place in the history of Ashbourne. Today, its two-hundred-year heritage is the backdrop for luxury apartments and mews houses created within a carefully restored Grade II Listed setting. Built in 1703, the building was originally the Nags Head Inn and formed part of the Ashbourne Hall estate. In fact its Park Road frontage was part of the original boundary wall of the Hall’s gardens – now the town’s public park. The finely-proportioned house took on a new life in 1794 when the daughters of the leading 18th century scientist and poet Erasmus Darwin founded a school for girls there – as marked by a commemorative plaque beside the main entrance on St John’s Street. In the last century, the house was better known as the home of Dr Quintus Madge, a much-respected family doctor who practised in Ashbourne from 1911 through to 1970 and in whose memory the building was renamed.
