Historic farmhouse transformed
January 2009
An historic Derbyshire farmhouse is being restored to its former glory thanks to a major refurbishment and extension contract carried out by the Amos Group.
The project at Ashes Farm, Fenny Bentley, near Ashbourne includes substantial extensions built in keeping with the property’s historic character. In all, the former working farm is being transformed into a manor house of almost double its original size.
The Group won the significant contract following a competitive tendering process, and in addition suggested potential improvements which have added value to the project at no extra cost to the client.
Meeting the stringent standards required for an historic traditional building within the Peak District National Park, the Amos Group’s craftsmen have combined natural materials with modern technology. Extensive use is being made of natural stone and oak, while up-to-the-minute features include underfloor heating throughout.
An additional challenge has been to meet the requirements of Natural England to protect bats which were found to roost in parts of the property.
A significant factor of the project is the speed of work, with the contract on schedule to be completed in under five months. The target date is particularly important for the owners who wanted the building work finished before the birth of their new baby.
Amos Group is able to carry out projects such as this at a price which is competitive with many smaller companies, but offering the client the added value of using a large professional contractor.
The owners commented: “We’re four months into this major project and Amos are running to schedule and cost. The quality of workmanship and attention to detail is fantastic – it’s difficult to tell the new build extensions from the original 17th century elements. Having access to a large team of experienced craftsmen, Amos really are able to deliver what they promise.”
